World Cup Team Records: Most Wins, Biggest Victories and Other All-Time Stats

Published 25 October 2026

Which nation has played and won the most World Cup matches? All-time team records after 2026: biggest wins, highest-scoring games, shoot-outs and streaks.

Player records such as Kylian Mbappé’s goal tally get most of the headlines, but the World Cup also has a long list of team records. Some have stood since the 1950s; others changed at the 48-team tournament in 2026. This page collects the most important all-time records for national teams, updated after the 2026 World Cup: appearances, matches and wins, the biggest victories, the highest-scoring games, penalty shoot-outs and the longest streaks.

The all-time table: appearances, matches and wins

Brazil is the only country that has played at all 23 World Cups, from 1930 to 2026. It also leads the all-time table for matches, wins and goals.

TeamTournamentsMatchesWinsGoals scored
Brazil2311979247
Germany / West Germany2111670243
Argentina199654171

Figures as of the end of the 2026 World Cup. Matches decided on penalties count as draws in official statistics.

Germany missed only the first tournament in 1930 and the 1950 edition, when it was not allowed to take part. It has qualified for every World Cup since 1954. Italy and Mexico have 18 appearances each. For Italy, 2026 was the third World Cup in a row without them, after 2018 and 2022.

In 2026, neither of the two leaders went deep into the tournament. Germany lost to Paraguay in the round of 32 and Brazil went out in the round of 16, so the gap at the top of the table changed little.

Other all-time marks

The biggest wins in World Cup history

The record victory dates from 1982, when Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1 in Spain. It is still the only time a team has scored ten goals in a World Cup match.

Hungary 10-1 El Salvador19829
Hungary 9-0 South Korea19549
Yugoslavia 9-0 Zaire19749
Sweden 8-0 Cuba19388
Uruguay 8-0 Bolivia19508
Germany 8-0 Saudi Arabia20028

The expansion to 48 teams in 2026 led many to predict new one-sided records, but they did not happen. The biggest margins of the 2026 group stage were six goals: Germany 7-1 Curaçao and Canada 6-0 Qatar.

The largest winning margin in a final is three goals, set by Brazil’s 5-2 win over Sweden in 1958.

The highest-scoring matches

The most goals in a single World Cup match came in the 1954 quarter-final between Austria and Switzerland, played in Lausanne during a heatwave. Austria won 7-5.

France 7-3 Paraguay195810

The 2026 third-place match in Miami joined the list. England led 4-0 at half-time before France pulled three goals back, and the game finished 6-4. You can read how it unfolded in our 2026 World Cup results.

The highest-scoring draws are England 4-4 Belgium (1954) and the Soviet Union 4-4 Colombia (1962).

The 1954 tournament in Switzerland dominates this list. Hungary scored 27 goals in five matches, yet lost the final 3-2 to West Germany, which it had beaten 8-3 in the group stage.

Spain is on the list twice, for opposite reasons. In 2010 it won the title with only eight goals in seven games. In 2026 it conceded just once in eight matches, the best defensive record of any World Cup winner.

The record total of 308 goals in 2026 is mainly a result of the larger format: 104 matches instead of 64. At 2.96 goals per match, however, it was also the highest scoring rate since 1970.

Penalty shoot-out records

Shoot-outs were introduced at the World Cup in 1978 and first needed in 1982.

Most shoot-outsArgentina, 7
Most shoot-outs wonArgentina, 6
Most shoot-outs lostSpain and the Netherlands, 4 each
Most won without a defeatCroatia, 4

Argentina’s only shoot-out defeat came against Germany in the 2006 quarter-final. Its six wins include the 2022 final against France.

Germany long had a perfect record too. It won all four of its shoot-outs, in 1982, 1986, 1990 and 2006. That run ended in the 2026 round of 32, when Paraguay won 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Foxborough. It was Germany’s first ever shoot-out defeat at a World Cup, and Croatia is now the only team with four shoot-out wins and no defeat.

How these records are counted

A few rules explain why figures sometimes differ between sources:

  1. West Germany and Germany are treated as the same team by FIFA. East Germany, which played only in 1974, is counted separately.
  2. Shoot-outs do not count as wins or defeats. A match decided on penalties goes into the statistics as a draw, even though one team advances.
  3. Only final tournaments count. Qualifying matches are not part of World Cup records.
  4. Records change every four years. With 48 teams and up to eight matches per team, totals will grow faster from now on. The next chance to break them is the 2030 World Cup.
